PEMF and grounding mats explained
General information only, not medical advice; see the disclaimer below. Specs are from manufacturer pages, with check dates. Affiliate links are coming soon.
What PEMF devices are
PEMF stands for pulsed electromagnetic field. Consumer PEMF mats and pads contain coils that produce pulsing magnetic fields, and makers list settings such as frequency (Hz) and intensity (often in gauss or microtesla). Some people use them as part of a relaxation routine.
What grounding mats are
Grounding or "earthing" mats are conductive mats that connect, by a cord, to the earth pin of a wall socket or to a ground rod. Some people use them at a desk or in bed.
What to check before buying
- Specs that are actually listed: frequency range, intensity, timer and power supply for PEMF; material, resistor and cord type for grounding mats.
- Electrical safety: the right plug and safety marks for your region, and whether your socket is wired with a working earth. Grounding plugs differ by country.
- Contraindications on the maker's own page: PEMF makers often list implanted electronic devices (such as pacemakers) and pregnancy as exclusions, so read them.
- Claims vs evidence: a maker's marketing isn't a regulatory approval, so look for what is actually certified.
